Introduction to the architecture of the Mediterranean city of Algiers and the desert cities of the M'Zab region

WPF_Algier_SS2014_hp_300In this seminar, the influences of the climate of a location, the cultural imprint, as well as the historical background of a non-European company on the urbanism and architecture are addressed and discussed with regard to their sustainability. Examined Algiers to the southern Mediterranean and the m'Zabtal in the Sahara desert of Algeria. Algiers explores the old city Kasbah (UNESCO World Heritage), the structures established during the French colonial period, as well as the future urbanization. Attention is paid to the comparison of the resulting architecture languages, as well as the (unrealized) designs by Le Corbusier. In the M'Zabtal, also world heritage, we ask ourselves: what urban, architectural and technical solutions have been developed to adapt to such extreme hot climate conditions? Are these 1000 years old urban structures - often as climate-friendly - sustainable in today's perspective? And in Outlook, what insights can be gained for sustainable building in Europe?

At the end of September, the seminar is accompanied by a multi-day excursion for the student.
